What is Autism? What are the Signs & Symptoms?
Autism, also called ASD, is a complex developmental disability that impacts a child’s language, social, sensory and behavioral development.
Common symptoms include:
Language delay or loss of acquired words
Difficulty in developing play skills
The need for sameness; difficulty tolerating change
Repetitive body movements, such as rocking, spinning or flapping their hands
Poor eye contact
‘Flat’ facial expressions
Difficulty making friends &/or developing other important relationships
What Causes Autism?
No one knows for sure, but many causes have been suggested. At Covenant, we know that children with autism have a consistent physical profile. They typically have inefficient digestion that leads to nutrient deficiencies. Additional digestive challenges often lead to constipation or diarrhea (often both!). They usually have difficulty with the process that turns food into energy. In other words, they have health problems that can be addressed. When we find the cause and the right intervention, kids improve! When kids feel better, they behave better!
